Test Results

How and when to obtain test results from the surgery

Results of tests and investigations

If you have had blood tests, X-rays etc. organised here, always call us to check your results. Most tests take about a week to come back with a result, although a few take 2 weeks or longer.

If you are phoning to find out the results of tests requested elsewhere, for instance, in hospital departments or clinics, we would always recommend you contact that department to get the result.

We do not routinely receive test results from other departments on their own; they generally inform us of results when they write to advise us of changes to treatments, or the results of a clinic visit, or similar. If we did not request the test from here in our practice, we are unlikely to have the result.

How long do my results take to come back?

Most blood test and urine samples are back within 5 days. Some tests do take longer and can be up to 14 days. If you are having an annual review, this can take up to 3 weeks as the nurses collate all your results together for an overall outcome.

We always advise patients to call the practice for their results. We will sometimes call you if the GP needs to speak to you but this depends on urgency. If you call the practice after 5 days, this flags to us if there are any missing results.
